Forum: GratefulDead Subject: belief system thread

Re: "atheism is a belief system."

Whenever I'm thinking about anything whatsoever, am I not making reference to a "belief system" -- or more likely, a concatenation of them? Isn't that how we all think? As human beings, we all have belief "thinking" systems, and non-belief "thinking" systems. What else could our "thinking" possibly be based upon?

Some of my belief systems:

a) what goes around, comes around
b) 10 pounds of shit requires a 10-pound bag
c) shit in one hand, wish in the other hand, see which happens 1st
d) insanity is doing the same thing over and over, expecting a different outcome
e) when hiking, never lose elevation unnecessarily
f) cheapest, fastest, best - you may always have any 2 - but never have all 3
g) food, water, sleep - you may survive for weeks on any 2 - without all 3 you will die
h) you are what you eat
i) life on Earth is getting better or worse - Life never stays the same
j) GD's sound at RFK stadium - June 9 & 10, 1973 - was the best PA sound I ever heard
k) Monte's Taper Handbook
l) 420 will get you through times of No Money better than money will get you through times of No 420
m) you don't get something for nothing
n) the Best path to Peace is through a Truth and Reconciliation Movement
o) I believe in Mother Nature
p) USA's justice system is "innocent until proven broke" (unable to afford an attorney)
q) USA's justice system is not "justice" - it's "Just Us"
r) if you think something is "too good to be true" - it probably is
s) we should say thank you! to The Archive and the eTree dot-org community
t) Glenn Beck is a fucking liar!

I was thinking much the same thing. Atheism is a belief system only if a "belief system" isn't really a term with much meaning. It would make belief and non-belief the same thing and I don't think that's really what believers think.

Fun thread!

This is so true:
cheapest, fastest, best - you may always have any 2 - but never have all 3

And the corollary, if you're in business offering a service, you can offer all 3 for a short while, but you'll soon run the business into the ground.

Ask my wife--it (the equation) changes as you age: I am cheap (there is no doubt), and now, it just so happens, that being fast, is best.

Don't ask for anymore information, as it will go downhill fast.

This Could Become Chernobyl on Steroids

The first reactor exploded over the weekend. The second reactor, which is Unit Three, exploded the next day. Yesterday, the third reactor which is Unit Two exploded —so, One, Two and Three now have all had hydrogen explosions.

These are not nuclear explosions. They are hydrogen chemical explosions. Hydrogen is created because the fuel is very hot. At these extreme temperatures the fuel rods become very corrosive. Enormous amounts of hydrogen are created.

The biggest problem seems to be in the second reactor, where the containment appears to be ruptured, and the reactor, as well, may be damaged from this explosion. So the explosion yesterday was the most severe.

The most telling issue is that the site has been evacuated. There was 800 people on the site, and then they evacuated all but 60 people. That’s basically telling the crew to "man the lifeboats".

In the fourth unit, there was a fire in the fuel pool. There are unconfirmed reports that it has started back up again. In the fifth and six units, the fuel pools are getting warmer.

So, basically, three units are in meltdown condition. One is definitely worse than the other two. But, you know, "meltdown" and "worse" are relative terms. It’s very bad in three units. The fire in the fourth unit is also a serious concern.

Small amounts of radiation have been detected in Tokyo, which is not a problem, yet. Thank goodness. If there is any goodness coming out of this, it’s that the wind is blowing out to sea right now. If the wind were to shift inland, I think we’d have a different situation.

And the last thing is that the emergency zone, out to 20 kilometers, people have been told to leave. And out to 30 kilometers, people have been told to stay indoors, wash your clothes when you come in, wash your body if you go outside and come back in. I think that’s not enough. I really think that emergency planning needs to be upgraded. At the least, children in that zone should be sent elsewhere.

-- Arnie Gundersen, nuclear engineer

Tokyo's weather forecast is showing westerly winds through from today through Thurs night (winds are out of the NNW, SW, and due West). Friday's forecast is "Partly Cloudy. High: 52 °F. Wind SSE 10 mph. Windchill: 35 °F."

Get the HELL outta there by Thursday night -- especially children and pregnant women. SSE winds forecast on Friday will be blowing the Nuclear Radiation fallout inland.
